Radboud University presents Etmaal van de Communicatiewetenschap 2019

Welcome!

Radboud Communication Science is happy to announce that it will be hosting this year's Etmaal van de Communicatiewetenschap.

The theme of Etmaal 2019 conference is Communication Science and Artificial Intelligence: The best of both worlds, focusing on fostering the growing field at the intersection of Communication Science and Artificial Intelligence in the Netherlands and Flanders.

The ongoing technological developments in the media landscape provide unprecedented opportunities for communication research, for example regarding the objects of study, methods of data collection and analysis, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Broadly, three persistent developments can be identified, involving an increasing focus on (1) the interaction between individuals and intelligent media technologies (e.g., virtual and augmented reality, parasocial relations with avatars and robots, automated journalism); (2) personalized communication, involving the collection and use of (behavioral) data to tailor communication to (groups of) users (e.g., online recommender systems, tailored advertising and news); and (3) methods of computational social science and machine learning, involving the collection, statistical analysis, and data-mining of behavioral data during (social) media use for research purposes (e.g., sensing media user states with wearables, data feedback interventions, user monitoring and tuning of serious games). At the core of these main developments in the academic media landscape lie the principles and techniques of Artificial Intelligence; that is, the simulation of intelligent behavior in computers. Therefore, to stimulate cross-fertilization between Communication Science and Artificial Intelligence, the conference has a specific focus on interdisciplinary research that attempts to builds bridges between both disciplines.

Etmaal van de Communicatiewetenschap 2019 welcomes proposals on a wide scope of topics that aim to discuss and reflect on state of the art communication science research and its possible intersections with AI, and this in terms of theoretical concepts, applied methodology and empirical findings. The deadline for abstract submission is Sunday, 4 November 2018, 23:59. You can register here for the conference before 7th of January 2019
